At SurvTech Solutions, every milestone is an opportunity to reflect on our journey and the people who help us succeed. Jim Hawxwell, one of our dedicated survey technicians, has been a vital part of our growth for over a decade. We sat down with Jim to learn more about his journey, his experiences, and how he has seen the industry evolve over the last 13 years.
1. Jim, you've been with SurvTech Solutions for 13 years now. Can you tell us what initially drew you to the company?
Back in 2011, I was looking for survey companies online, and I came across SurvTech Solutions. What really caught my attention was the videos of Dave and Stacy discussing the company on the website. It wasn’t just what they said but also the fact that they were from Maine—just like me. I took it as a sign that it was meant to be.
2. How has your role as a survey technician evolved over the years? How have you seen technology change in the surveying industry during your time at SurvTech Solutions?
While my role as a survey technician has remained consistent, the technology I use has evolved dramatically. When I started, we were using Topcon GR-3 GPS units, which had minimal range. Fast forward to today, and I’m running a Carlson BRX-7 system with listen-listen ATT broadband. It has several miles of range, making the job not only more efficient but more accurate.
3. What has been one of the most memorable projects you've worked on?
There have been a few projects that really stand out over the years. One of the most challenging was the University of Tampa housing high-rise project, where I laid out all the grid lines floor by floor for contractors. Another memorable one was the BMW distribution center in Greer, South Carolina. I laid out the survey control for our scanning department to use throughout the buildings. Then there’s the Citrus solar field, where we staked out 40,000 solar panels for installation—that was quite an experience.
4. What do you think sets SurvTech Solutions apart from other companies in the industry?
At SurvTech, Dave and Stacy have created an environment where employees are treated like family, not just a number. That’s what sets SurvTech apart. The sense of community and respect they show for their team is something you don’t find at every company, and it’s a big part of why I’ve been here for so long.
5. Looking back on your 13 years at SurvTech Solutions, what are you most proud of?
I’m proud to have been part of SurvTech’s journey over the past 13 years, especially when it comes to helping the company grow. The success of the Survey department over the years has enabled SurvTech to expand into additional departments. It feels good to know that I’ve played a part in that growth.
6. What are you looking forward to in the future with SurvTech Solutions?
I’m excited to continue being part of SurvTech’s future and to see the company grow even more. I look forward to tackling new and challenging jobs and helping SurvTech prosper in the years to come.
Jim Haxwell’s 13-year journey at SurvTech Solutions is a testament to the company's commitment to its people and the power of evolving technology. We’re grateful for his dedication and look forward to what the future holds with Jim on the team!
