Mining is a prime candidate to use 3D laser scanning, because in most cases all vegetation is stripped from the area to be mined. Thereby creating “line of sight” to the proposed surface to be mined or to the post mined surface for an excellent situation to create a DTM, (Digital Terrain Model). Inventory piles of mined product are typically bare of vegetation. In both situations laser scanning creates a more accurate DTM more efficiently and also eliminates the safety hazard of surveyors climbing piles or descending into pits.
