In 1796, in an effort to standardize surveying measurements, the U.S. Congress commissioned David Rittenhouse to construct a surveyor's chain to serve as a standard for the U.S. Land Office. Rittenhouse produced a chain of 80 links, measuring 66 feet and made of brass. This was the prototype surveyor's chain used to measure early U.S. Territories.
