Surveying
Fact:
President Abraham Lincoln was a professional surveyor.
His career as a surveyor lasted only a few years. His
projects included government surveys, road surveys, town
lots, and private surveys. Financially, there were
difficulties and at one point his equipment was sold at
auction to satisfy a debt. A farmer named John Short
bought the items for $120 and returned them to Lincoln.
The instruments passed through several owners and are
now on display at "Lincoln's New Salem State Historic
Site".
Surveying Fact
Did you know
that three of the four presidents immortalized on Mt. Rushmore
were surveyors?! It's true! George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,
and Abraham Lincoln were all professional land surveyors.
Do you
have kids that wonder what you do at work? Have you wanted
to explain what you do at a career day?
As Marketing Director for SurvTech Solutions Surveying &
Mapping in Tampa, Florida, I often get to create and
collaborate on a great deal of interesting and creative
projects. Having started in the surveying profession as a
rodman myself, and working all the way up to chief, then
learning how to draft and eventually coming into my current
position, I think I have a unique perspective that most
marketing people don't.
One thing we will be doing in the future at SurvTech
Solutions is participating in The Great American Teach In.
So we wanted to create something really cool for this, that
would both be educational and about surveying, but still
appealing to children.
So I created the SurvTech Solutions Land Surveying Coloring
Book! It's a children's coloring book made for kids from
Kindergarten to 3rd grade. It has different types of
surveying, information about different services, famous
surveyors and other cool stuff. The surveyors themselves are
different animal people performing the tasks. Even though
it's a SurvTech copy written material. I wanted to share it
with the community as most of us have children that might
think it's a neat thing to have.
Everyone who has seen it has really enjoyed it so far, and
the best thing I've heard it that it's a great way to
explain what we do to our kids because some of the concepts
are hard for really little kids to understand.
It's designed to be printed on 11 X 17 paper, single sided,
but you can print it out at whatever size you want.
If you have any questions about how you can use it, feel
free to contact me and I'd be glad to reply.
So enjoy! It's fun and hopefully a great introduction into
the world of surveying that we call home.
